On July 9, 1931, tall, 34 year
old Albert Johnson arrived at Ft. Macpherson, Canadian Northwest Territories, to try his hand at trapping in the
fur-rich Rat River region. He built a snug cabin and readied himself for winter and the trapping season. A loner,
no one ever heard him say a word but when the trapping season opened, other trappers in the area complained to the
Canadian Northwest Mounted Police that Johnson was invading their trapping areas. The Mounties went to Johnson's
cabin to question him but were greeted with gunfire. That encounter would set the stage for one of the most famous
manhunts in Canadian History. During the heat of the hunt, more than 100 citizens and dozens of mounted police tracked Johnson through impossibly rough terrain in temperatures reaching more than 50 degrees below zero. Finally, the Mounties called in a new airplane called a monoplane piloted by W.R. "Wop" May, who located Johnson on a hair-pin turn of the Eagle River and directed the mounted police to his camp. A terrific gun battle ensued and Johnson was finally brought down after being shot nine times. To this day, no one knows who Albert Johnson was. No one, in fact, ever heard him speak a word! ![]() Soc Clay's Mad Trapper Sourdough Starter was carried along on the famous hunt for Albert Johnson. The mounties and their posse stayed on the trail of Johnson for several months, and men had to prepare food on the trail in the harshest of conditions. Soc Clay's Mad Trapper Sourdough Starter helped keep the posse fed throughout much of the manhunt. The starter, which originated during the last great gold rush in 1899-1901, was used until Sam Roberson acquired a starter from the original after he landed in Alaska during World War II. Sam kept the starter going during the next 30 years that he lived in Alaska, making a living as a trapper, bear guide, commercial fisherman and as a highly acclaimed travel writer. He brought the starter to Tennessee during the late 1960s and continues to use it. In 1980, Sam gave Soc Clay a start of the famous starter. Soc has used the starter ever since. Today, using a unique process he developed, Soc Clay is able to de-hydrate the original starter to the consistency of ground meal. He now ships the historic sourdough starter all over the world. ![]()
